Mothers # 3

"Mom, I need my space.. Please leave me alone....", he said as he shut the door on his mom's face. The mom grimaced and went to the kitchen - to make her son's favourite pasta.

Twenty minutes later, he heard a knock on his door.

"What is it, mom?", he shouted not bothering to get up and open the door.

"I've made pasta, beta... "

He sighed.. "She just wouldn't leave me alone", he thought to himself. "Mom! Keep it on the table. I'll eat when I want to.."

His mother went back to the kitchen. She wiped her eyes with the end of her pallu only to realize that she had no tears in her eyes. Her cheeks were, however, red.

The tears finally appeared when she heard the main door of the house banged shut. She picked up the empty plate from the dining table and placed it in the sink. She remembered her son sleeping with his head on her lap when he had hurt his knees on the playground at the age of eight. She would pat him to sleep and only then go to sleep.

Today, her son was lost in his own world and every question from her was an intrusion into his space, his privacy. He had grown up and maybe she should too, she thought.

****

Five years later, the phone rang. It was her son.

"Mum.. it's so hectic to be working here. Things were so good at home... There's no one to come back to.... Mom, missing you.... I need my space. My space, my place, on your lap...."

The tears in the mother's eyes appeared sooner this time.

  1. This is just a sentimental crock of Shit !!! When there is a grave problem of malnutrition, lack of education, an abysmal status of our Nation in the Human Development Index, all you want to rattle on is about the oedipus sentiment a boy has for his mother and vice-versa, when a student with your mature thought should focus on Nation-building and similar ideas. I know that the typical resentment that you would have is:

    1. Its my blog, give me my expressive freedom.
    2. Why is sentiment a taboo topic ?
    3. I am contributing in my own humble way to the society.

As to all of your resentments, all i can suggest is, leave the sentiments and such small fry to the feeble minded. As is commonly said, Small minds discuss people and Great minds discuss ideas. Let us discuss ideas on your blog as to how bring forward the nation to a force of strength. When i read India-bashing as this chum indulges in, all i can think of is how to put a stop to all the negatives of our country, to the extent of spreading the awareness to guys like you.

    Cheers,
    Chander.

  2. Chander,

    Thanks for your comment.

For one, I do not believe that sentiments are a small fry and that they should be left to the feeble minded. I express my emotions in person as vividly as I do on my blog. I see nothing wrong with it. Why should Indians consider it their negative only because someone else does India-bashing over the topic? Why are we intellectually/psychologically dependent (for our appraisal) on the western world? Why are we imitating them?

For the issues I feel about, (though I agree they have been small), I have written time and again on my blog. Just that my style of writing is the parable which may be making you feel that I am discussing people and not ideas where the fact is that the people in my blogposts are almost incarnations of the ideas I want to bring forth.

As a final note, I really do not relate to the community that indulges in intellectual masturbation (pardon the words, others) over the blogposts believing that they are doing things for the nation on the whole. I stick to Kritagnyata and some other endeavours for that. Which means that though it may be commonly said that it is better to discuss ideas than people, I believe in actions than ideas.

This one, for one, was essentially an artwork.

What is that supposed to mean ? Do you want to say that while more than half the nation suffers poverty living on meagre wages of less than $2 a day, and widespread illiteracy around us, we conveniently sit on this time-bomb and discuss personifications and sentiments. Do you mean that we should ignore this just because an independent body has quoted figures that put "India Shining" into shame ? I never said about being sycophant of our (India's) appraisal ? I just said, even as more and more people in our nation are coming out of the BPL(Below Poverly Line) line, we want us to have ideas translated to actions which is precisely what a person of your acumen should be doing.

...the people in my blogposts are almost incarnations of the ideas I want to bring forth.
Dude, My shadow of an idea and yours are as different as chalk and cheese ; I believe that the challenge an Indian mother faces at this moment is of feeding 2 square meals per day to her child, and not an intrusion in privacy.

I stick to Kritagnyata and some other endeavours for that. Which means that though it may be commonly said that it is better to discuss ideas than people, I believe in actions than ideas.
I appreciate your efforts for the same ; And believe me, i never said leave ideas hanging ; the next step is to put them into action. But action without ideas are futile. So, let this blog serve a loftier purpose was all my intention.

  5. @ chandler: whn u say' "Let us discuss ideas on your blog as to how bring forward the nation to a force of strength."....i wonder how this discussion will actually help in bringing the nation forward..... if u really want to get tht impact thn u need to take actions......mere discussions will do nothing.....discussing malnutrition will not feed the starving kids....

@ Aadi: whatever i wanted to tell chandler, u said it best in ...."Which means that though it may be commonly said that it is better to discuss ideas than people, I believe in actions than ideas." yet i thought i better put it in my words and make my statement.

as for the blogpost, i do appreciate the way u peel layers of human mind to show the intricacies....looking forward to read more such posts....

  8. Irrespective of whether the nation moves forward or otherwise, as a result of the post - it is just artwork. Art needs appreciation to survive and here is mine.

This post will make any mom and son feel special. It made me feel special.
